Volume Indication At The Victoria Library
“State Library of Victoria Sound-Level Signage System” is a spatial wayfinding project developed through human-centred design and service design methods. The project addresses the conflict in sound needs between different library users—learners and tourists. Field research and interviews revealed shortcomings in the existing signage, including issues with icon size, clarity of hierarchy, and effectiveness of communication. To resolve this, I designed a sound-zoning system centred on colour, icons, and decibel-inspired visual symbols: green for quiet zones, yellow for discussion zones, and red for open communication zones. The system uses modular cube-shaped signs that also provide users with additional explanations and learning resources. This design not only improves the overall user experience but also emphasises readability and inclusivity for multicultural and low-literacy groups, creating a balance between functionality and user-friendliness within the library space.
